Why Dressing Well is a form of Good Manners

Why Dressing Well is a form of Good Manners

Tom Ford, a fashion expert and a film director once said; ” Dressing well is a form of good manners”. It might sound rude and nonsense but I finally understood it later in life. At the end, it makes all sense to me. Don’t get me wrong, you might think that I’m superficial and inconsistent because I’m advocating to remain low-key and simple. Your question might be, how come now I’m telling people to make a change and dress well? Nonetheless, I hope you will keep on reading and understand the context of my article today.

I used to be sloppy and I admit that. For those who knew me in the past, I always wear black or white shirts. You might have seen me wearing pants with holes on it, on an over-sized, old shirts and with untidy shoes. There was even a time, the guards wont allow me to get inside our office because I was wearing a ripped-jeans. Good thing they let me in when I told them that it wasn’t a style, it was just an old, faded pants.

I never liked that I had to dress a certain way to get the respect I thought I deserved or get people to listen to me. I did not care on what I wear and how did I look. I knew that there’s nothing wrong of staying that way. That was what I believed in. For many years, I thought it was the best thing to do for myself. And then, I experienced something that has changed my life.

I had a dinner with a friend who is a very successful businessman that runs food and publishing business in the country. He has been my mentor for several years and I’ve got wise ideas from him as a person I always look up to. We’ve talked about many things like business ideas, investments, lifestyle, and many other things…

Surprisingly, we have talked about if it’s necessary to dress-up. I was caught in an honest and friendly argument. I told him about how some billionaires keep on wearing casual and informal dress. I sighted Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, who only wears a single-designed shirt. But then, I was hit by a hard truth. He told me that I am not Mark Zuckerberg, so it’s a must to dress well. His words woke me up. I could’t agree more, Because not everyone is Mark Zuckerberg! I believe you know what I mean…

Common misconceptions of dressing well:

  • It must be expensive and always brand-new.
  • They must have spent all their money on clothes.
  • Dressing well is not for me.
  • They might be shopping-addicts.
  • I am satisfied with how I look, why change?
  • Dressing well is always wearing a suit.
  • Dressing well is pursuing the latest fashion trend.

why is it important?

1. It makes you comfortable and at ease.

When you feel that you are untidy, it’s always an involuntary reaction to feel  the obvious discomfort.  Dressing well makes you feel comfortable and emphasize your confidence levels.

As I don’t want to get stared with weird looks by number of people when walking around the city or in our office, it seriously annoys and a bit awkward. Be sure to check that you don’t overdress. Remember, you dress appropriately not because you want to show-off.

2. It shows self-respect and personal care.

For some reasons, it also shows how much you take good care of yourself. I have heard this often from my friends before; “You must care for yourself!”  I did not understand it at first but I came to realize, it was something important that I need to do. It was a leap of faith but I was able to do it. Sometimes, you have to really change your wardrobe for good.

Now, I’m seeing clothes and garments from a different angle of thinking. It is one of the non-negotiables.  For me, it’s also a form of investment and buying right clothes are necessary, especially if you are working in a corporate world. Deciding to dress well today is a good decision in your life and you would definitely benefit from it.

3. It demands respect.

Putting more effort into your appearance is one of the easiest ways to improve your image, social influence and the way people see you. It falls under the broader category of non-verbal communication.

As a matter of fact, if you dress well and look presentable, that means that you respect yourself and it shows courtesy. In return, people will admire you and listen to you. If you abuse your own self by not taking care and looking miserable, you attract same kind of behavior from others.

4. It brings a message.

Your dress speaks a lot about you. So, dressing well  is an important and good habit to develop. It doesn’t have to be costly and expensive. There are brands nowadays that are affordable and very good in style. To boost your confidence, dress well. As one of my good friends said, she has not met a speaker or an influencer who doesn’t look good.

Choose clothing that reflects who you are and the image you want to project, even if that means spending more time at the mall and more time getting ready in the morning.

5. It goes for the win.

Use clothing as a weapon to get what you want; whether it’s a new job, a product presentation or a business approval. Always dress like its the best day of your life. It sounds like a millennial mantra and  it works for me. It wins clients, closed business deals, and opened lot of opportunities. As the old saying goes; “Never underestimate the power of a good outfit”.

From other people’s perspective, when we go for shopping we pick-up the products which are visually more appealing. Likewise when it comes to people, we pick the person who is most pleasing to our eyes. Hence, presentation matters.
