How to Save Money Without Depriving Yourself

“Live a life of a minimalist, not a street pauper”  This has been an ideal mantra to live-by and I’m constantly reminding myself that a good saver should not deprive himself of things that are necessary. Some people who practiced saving haven’t really got the point of it, did it all wrong and brought it to the opposite direction. Like them, I had only two words in mind: save money. That was my early mistakes too that I spotted and got corrected…

On the other hand, saving money is now a trend in the country and it’s already cool to take a look at. With things like 52-weeks money challenge and other financial campaigns are always featured on the news, I can say this is getting popular which is way too different 5 years ago. There are also several groups who raised financial awareness, trainings, and seminars that have made the community growing. Thanks to social media… By that, I was also invited to guest in a popular  TV show this month!

I’ve written this very first blog in 2018 to give a message to every Filipino and also a message to myself, that there are things to put into consideration when practicing to be wise in handling money… Things which are very important and we should not set aside.

Eat Healthy Food

Thomas Fuller says; “Health is not valued till sickness comes”. When I started practicing handling money seriously, my early mistake was to cut a large amount of my budget for food. True enough, I was able to save-up a lot due to that decision.

I bought and stored different kinds of tuyo (dried fish), canned goods and low-budget food. So, my menu most of the time were identical.  There were even times, I have just bought a piece of bread for a meal.

As a result, I got sick more often and I was visibly thin (many have already asked me if I have tuberculosis). I thought it was all good but there’s a critical line between managing money and taking care of your health. Sacrificing the latter can cause a huge disaster. Good thing, I always have a health card and it has been saving me huge expenses for various medical assistance.

However,I probably have avoided getting sick in the first place if I have eaten healthy food. By that time, I was hit by a hard truth. It was a turning point for me, there’s no substitute for health and wellness!

Have enough sleep

The best way to increase your income on the top of your monthly salary is to work overtime or do sideline jobs. I knew some people who are doing it extremely like having 3-4 jobs altogether. I’m not sure how they do it but working hard to death is not that wise. Your body needs to rest.

Few friends have asked me on how I was able to manage my time given that I have several works on the sideline. Well, it was not that easy to adjust at first but the timezone of my full time job gives me flexibility to do other things.

I work in an American brokerage firm and I follow Wall Street’s office hours. So when I got home in the morning, I can still trade during Philippine trading hours, do blogging and manage my blog site, meet my clients, write few articles and do small business. There’s a twist. I can still sleep 7-8 hours a day.

Choose quality over quantity

I’ve already grown into becoming a mature shopper and I always made sure to buy quality stuffs. I don’t settle for just cheap but only short-lived. Of course, it would take time to find an affordable and also quality products but through internet and friend’s recommendations, I knew now where to go to buy them.

When buying clothes, I always love going to Surplus in SM or Uniqlo. These are the small clothing shops with very good and quality clothes (with reasonable price tags). Fashion-wise, it is a very good choice to go to as well. I’ve bought most of my office clothes from there.

Buying factory excess and overruns is also another way to find quality products with a good price. You have to really check them properly because some sellers are mixing fake clothes for their advantage.

Treat yourself sometimes

Travel in a beautiful place once in a while, eat in your favorite restaurant when you have a budget for it, and buy an expensive stuff you really like when you have extra money.

I’ve been a fan and an advocate of delayed gratification but I would advise you to cash-out for these sometimes. Learning how to make money is great but learning how to live a life is another thing. Being extreme on your finances is not good. I’ve been there, done that.

As a public speaker and a stock broker, I buy good clothes as a good investment. For those who knew me, the way I dress-up before was very far from how do I handle myself today. It was then when the woman I dated before who was into fashion told me that dressing well is a form of good manners. Spending money to look good and be presentable are good expenses. As a result, I was able to be more comfortable and I was a able to get more clients.

I believe that a balance lifestyle is profitable for us in the long run and  it has long term benefits. We want to enjoy the fruits of our labor in the future. If we take good care of our finances, we should take good care of our health too. We don’t need to sacrifice one from the other.

King Solomon, the wealthiest person in the world, during his death bed once said; “There’s is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul(himself) enjoy good in his labor…”-Ecclesiastes 2:24-26. We should not forget to treat ourselves well the way it should be.

I like one of my friends said to me few years ago; ” I’m saving because I want to see my family well-supported and I want to see them living a comfortable life”. That’s the whole point! I also want to see you enjoying your hardwork few years from now where you can spend more time with your family and retire young.
